Marco Learning is a fast-growing education technology startup designed to support high school teachers and their students with our signature grading service. Teachers upload student work into our custom grading software, and our network of more than 1,000 graders provides detailed, personalized feedback in a matter of days. This year, Marco Learning will support more than 100,000 students through school-based programs and millions more through free and low-cost content on our social media and web platforms.

Responsibilities
You will oversee and manage the entire development cycle:

Software Engineering

  • Plan the technical specifications and architecture of new features and changes
  • Write and maintain high quality, testable code
  • Ensure deployments succeed and that production systems stay up
  • Manage the timely resolution of bugs, database changes, and server errors
  • Manage production releases
  • Manage processes to keep servers and frameworks up to date
  • Address security and technical debt as it arises

Product Planning 

  • Collaborate with Marco Learning’s Director of Online Education, part-time engineers, and other business sponsors of the relevant features or tools.
  • Advise on solutions based on quarterly priorities
  • Develop solution specs and facilitate handoff to engineering
  • Provide updates on progress, triage new issues as they arise
  • Report on post-release metrics

Account Management

  • Setting/tracking KPIs for engineering
  • Formal one-on-ones/reviews with engineers
  • Regular check ins with Marco Learning Director of Online Education

Requirements

  • You have 5-7+ years at a senior level
  • You have played a role in building and managing a small team.
  • You have a proven record of solving engineering problems and tracking down issues across the stack.
  • You can serve as lead technical architect, technical decision-maker, and engineering lead for the platforms, tools, and services developed by our engineering team
  • You can give feedback on how we should prioritize and select solutions to our top problems.
  • You can communicate technical ideas to non-technical team members.
  • You demonstrate an organized approach to solving problems.
  • You consistently ask for and implement feedback.
  • You are not afraid of change and welcome the opportunity to problem solve.

Our Products
Marco Learning’s Grading platform enables teachers to upload assignments and receive high-quality feedback on their students’ work from qualified grading assistants who we find and vet. The product’s primary workflow is:

  • Teachers can upload their assignments with student work attached.
  • We find and match their assignment with a Grader (typically graduate and undergraduate students).
  • The Grader grades the assignment in our platform.
  • We return the assignment, student work, and automatically generated reports to the teacher.

Marco Learning’s AP Support Products provide teachers and their students with resources to succeed teaching or taking AP exams.  The primary customer journeys completed through our Wordpress site include:

  • Purchase and enroll in courses and workshops
  • Download free resources (Study Guides, Practice Tests, Lesson Plans)
  • Attend free webinars

Your First Six Months

Month 1-2: Onboarding into Marco Learning systems.  Learn all there is to know about our tech stack, and take part in the day to day management of the Grading app.

Month 3-4:  Work with engineering resources to clear out the development project backlog. Develop plan to bring on additional full time engineers. Prioritize additional engineering projects to improve and optimize the Grading app.

Month 5-6: Bring on at least one full time engineer. Work on prioritized projects to improve and optimize the Grading app. Scope out/develop integration between the Grading app and top SIS (student information systems) our school partners use.
