Rich Hickey posted a sharp and forceful opinion piece entitled “Open Source is Not About You.” There’s a bit of history associated with this post, which I believe was summarized accurately here on r/Clojure. Hickey’s point revolves around the idea that just because someone open sources something does not imply they owe the users anything more — least of all “a change in their [personal] status, focus and effort, e.g. from inventor to community manager.”
Rich’s thoughts and feelings on this topic are probably shared by most people who have put time and money into open source projects they created — especially a large or popular one like WordPress.
🎩 Tip of the hat to Daniel Bachhuber for sharing this.
