Although not directed related to WordPress, the acquisition of Magento Commerce by Adobe for $1.68 Billion (USD) — significantly less than Adobe’s Q1 2018 net revenues — is big news in the eCommerce community. Magento Commerce is the cloud version of Magento which shares about a quarter of its code with the open source Magento Community Edition (CE).
Adobe plans to bring Magento into its Experience Cloud, an Enterprise CMS platform. Matt Asay, head of Adobe’s developer ecosystem, expressed the company’s commitment “to the stewardship of open platforms and diverse creative communities.”
With Square‘s acquisition of Weebly — also at a price close to Square’s quarterly revenues — two established eCommerce and publishing platforms are now backed by industry leaders with large and growing markets.
