What is an “Expert?”
We use the word “expert” a lot in business. But what makes someone an expert at anything?
Is it time? Is it education? Research? Or is it merely perception?
I’ve been called an expert at different things during my life: customer success, DEIB, web design, massage therapy law (ask me later about that one), and community building. I didn’t go to school for any of that. And to be honest, I know I have a lot more to learn in every area, and I don’t consider myself an expert at all.
“Expert” is a term we throw out there when someone displays knowledge and understanding of an area we know less about. (At least that’s how I see it.)
I’ve had a lot of formal education. But none of that led to the work that I do, and, honestly, some of the most expert people I know didn’t attend college at all.
So what are you an expert at? And what do you consider the qualifications of an expert?
