What makes something “WordPress?”

I don’t mean software. I mean all the other “stuff.” I have what I call “gap-filling” projects that are gifts to the WordPress community, but owned and managed by me. Would you consider those “WordPress?”

What makes the WordPress community a community?

My friend, Christine, belongs to a Facebook group Jeep club. The group gets together with a few Jeeps (or with many) and does drives, cookouts, and other things together. A few years ago (2020) I got to tag along as her club joined dozens of others to do a few laps around the Watkins Glen Raceway. We waited our turn for our 10 Jeeps to take the course. We followed a pace car. It wasn’t a race. It was just fun! And it wasn’t officially part of any larger organization. But it was still “Jeep.”

Does a project or a group or a meetup have to be “official” to be part of the community, part of WordPress? As we grow and as we continue to build community, this is an important question to ask ourselves. It’s an important way to address how we include or exclude, how we welcome, or how we turn away.
