WordCamp Dhaka Canceled
It doesn’t happen often (I think the last time was due to COVID in 2020), but recently the decision was made to cancel WordCamp Dhaka.
When companies attempt to exert influence on the planning process, the Community Team must step in to mediate. In this instance, we have decided to cancel WordCamp Dhaka 2023.
(From the WordCamp Dhaka website)
While our community is in so many ways so very positive, there will always be, in any community, bad actors that will affect some or all of the rest of us. We’ve seen it in how Mika Epstein was treated on the Plugin Review Team. We’ve seen it when Pantheon was removed as a WCUS sponsor. And now we’re seeing it as the Dhaka community is being affected.
Of course, there is a lot of conversation on the announcement post on the Make WordPress.org announcement, with some calling for publicly naming companies and individuals, and others arguing how that can further harm the community.
I don’t claim to have the answers, but I’m glad that, as a community, we have systems in place that (usually) help manage the situations like these.
