WP IDE is a service to take “WordPress development to the cloud.” It’s a bit facetious of me to call it cowboy coding as a service, but it’s what it reminds me of. It’s made by a guy named Wesley Carnicle.
I’m not sure how WP IDE will exactly replicate local development build features on development servers, but a WordPress-centric editor is an interesting concept.
Code editors and IDE’s are everywhere, it seems. And folks are really opinionated about them, in every respect. Sublime, Coda, PHPStorm, NetBeans, Atom — the competition will be significant for a new editor.
If they can make creating high quality development environments for WordPress easier, I’m all for it. I’m not optimistic, but I’ll be watching and let you know what comes of it. Some of the folks already beta testing it seem to have nice things to say.
How did you identify Carnicle as the maker? He’s quite an interesting character, but the domain (and nothing else, sadly) leads to Ovidiu Maghetiu, who identifies himself as the founder: http://www.romanianstartups.com/founder/ovidiu-maghetiu/

Hmm, interesting. Thanks Dan! I need to look into this further. I thought it was Carnicle based on some conversations I saw.
