Over on the OSTraining blog, Steve Burge does an analysis of public data to try and determine the number of websites that Wix, Weebly, and Squarespace actually have, and questions whether they are legitimate threats against WordPress.
Steve’s process is interesting, but the meat of his research is this:
But, it’s possible to create an approximate ranking showing the size of each platform. I’ve added the BuiltWith estimates for each platform:
- WordPress (14,700,000 sites)
- Joomla (2,800,000 sites)
- Wix (1,040,000 sites)
- Drupal (760,000 sites)
- Weebly (680,000 sites)
- Squarespace (450,000 sites)
Remember that this ranking is a best guess and accurate numbers are hard to come by. The only thing we can say for certain is that WordPress is way out in the lead.
Honestly, for paid platforms, I’m pretty impressed with these numbers from Wix, Weebly, and Squarespace. However, they are still in user acquisition mode, for as far as I recall, Wix especially has lost a lot of money to get where they are.
