When AI Buys the Coffee: How Agentic Commerce Is Changing Ecommerce
Imagine telling your AI assistant, “Find me the perfect gift for a coffee snob,” and within seconds it recommends a few options—complete with “Buy” buttons right there in the conversation. That kind of seamless shopping is already in motion.
This shift is happening through ChatGPT’s Agentic Commerce Protocol. For agencies building ecommerce sites, the rules of discovery, conversion, and control are about to change (again).
OpenAI’s Instant Checkout feature lets U.S. users buy items directly inside ChatGPT (starting with Etsy sellers). It uses the Agentic Commerce Protocol, which was built alongside Stripe and introduced as an open standard. In this model, ChatGPT surfaces product cards, and if a merchant supports Instant Checkout, the user can tap “Buy” and complete checkout without ever leaving the chat.
WooCommerce is preparing for this new era too with WooCommerce MCP and the Abilities API which will tap into the Agentic Commerce Protocol. Soon, AI users will be able to interact directly with Woo stores for ordering and store management.
Agencies building ecommerce sites have a bit of a learning curve ahead, but we also have a huge opportunity. Those who embrace the complexity now will be the ones clients turn to when AI-driven shopping becomes the norm.
