Welcome to the Post Status Draft podcast, which you can find on iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, and via RSS for your favorite podcatcher. Post Status Draft is hosted by Brian Krogsgard and this week’s special guest host, Diane Kinney.
Diane is a web professional and solo practitioner based in Florida. She’s writing a book with Carrie Dils called Real World Freelancing, and I thought it’d be fun to chat with her about freelancing.

What a great podcast! Glad I came across this site. I am trying to get into the IT consulting field, so Kinney’s nuggets of information are fantastic. Thanks!
Loved this talk, thanks so much to both of you.
A huge take-away for me was when Diane talked about not sinking yourself so deeply into one project that you stop developing your business. Also, I’ve always been resistant to tracking my time, but I feel more encouraged to do so in the way you outlined such as referring back to a google spreadsheet, estimated work breakdown vs. actual times spent.
Offering “strategy projects” rather than “discovery,” consider how “available” I want to appear, noting clients personality and number of decision makers, leaving room for unexpected incidental tasks, so many useful tips here. I really enjoyed this talk, very helpful, thanks again.
Thank you. Spot on.
I’ve been heads down for a couple of years with three customers. They make up 80% of my business. It still feels like I’m at risk even though it is really 3/.80. Does that feeling ever go away?
