100 Years is a Very Long Time
Last week WordPress announced its 100-Year Plan.
When I think of 100 years… Well, honestly, I don’t think about 100 years often, but when I do it’s almost always looking back at what we (the collective, global “we”) have accomplished in the last 100 years. In the (almost) 55 years I’ve been on this planet, we’ve landed on the moon, had countless wars, seen the dawning of the internet in ‘every’ home, have wired smart homes, and so so much more.
We’ve moved the needle on social issues and human rights. At least a little.
And we’ve made it so that anyone can publish on the internet.
But what does a 100-year URL/hosting plan let you accomplish?
- Legacy. Legacy for yourself, your loved ones, or someone else entirely.
- History. The ability to have your words, your thoughts, your hopes and dreams, somewhere for future generations.
- Opinion. Say it now. Read it for a century.
- Hubris. (Will what I say now matter in 100 years? Maybe. Maybe not.)
- Control. If your domain expired and someone else bought it, what can they say or do with it that might be contrary to your original intent?
All for the low price of $38,000.
Honestly, it’s a little pricey for my budget, but I can see where it could be appealing to individuals, organizations, and corporations.
But I’ll let my legacy be told in other ways.
