Delicious Brains has decided to shut down Mergebot, after three years of working on it. It was an ambitious project from the start, but they decided that it didn’t meet their standards.
Mergebot is by far the most ambitious product we’ve ever attempted. When we set out to solve WordPress’ database merging problems at our company retreat in 2015, I knew there was a very good chance that we wouldn’t be able to pull it off. But we went ahead anyway. It was the right time to attempt a moonshot. And although I’m very proud of the technology we’ve built over the last three years, our solution doesn’t reach the high standards that we aim for with all of our products.
Kudos to Brad Touesnard for the honest email to customers, and it was indeed a super ambitious project. I’m sure there are plenty of business reasons to support the change as well — and it must be hard to shelve an idea after years of laboring to build it.
Brad said in the email that they will be able to shift company resources to two new products: one for sending site email using Amazon SES, and second to help create WordPress-ready server environments quickly.
