Chip Bennett has done an outstanding job thoroughly describing the issues handling home and front page templates in WordPress. This is a part of WordPress with some of the most confusing nomenclature for folks just getting started (and some experienced people too). Definitely give this a good read if you make distributed themes or custom themes for clients.
