Medium is releasing “Medium for Publishers” which provides publishers a “free CMS”, a standalone URL, ability to host promoted posts, and paid memberships functionality. It’s being branded by some as a WordPress competitor, which is ridiculous.
With Medium, you are still hosting your content on someone else’s platform with limited control. But the tools they are building for supporting publishers are pretty compelling. They are also getting some big folks on board, including Bill Simmons, who previously ran Grantland on WordPress but is putting his new project — The Ringer — on Medium.
Medium was the most threatening platform to WordPress according to the survey I did before PressNomics. Even though we’re comparing apples to oranges, it’s still important for us to pay attention to what Medium is doing, and where it’s appropriate, learn from them.
