Meet Hazel Quimpo, the innovative founder of The Clever, a marketing agency for small businesses based in sunny Long Beach, California. Hazel is a solopreneur and fractional CMO with years of marketing experience for tech companies, which inspired her to help small businesses gain access to the same marketing strategies and tools as big companies. With a no-BS approach, Hazel specializes in marketing and branding for tech and software-related things and successfully led the launch of StellarWP as a brand within Liquid Web.
Hazel’s passion for community-building is what initially attracted her to the wild world of WordPress. She has launched the first Orange County, CA community for Yelp and created the “Coachella for Kids” event called Littlepalooza for families in Long Beach called LB Littles.
Hazel believes in empowering individuals to earn their first dollar online by simplifying the complexities of WordPress and all of the various endpoints business have across the internet thes edays.
Hazel is also a Notion expert and plans to release some templates later this year.
With her knack for event planning, Hazel has organized around 100 weddings and thrown a bacon-themed party for 1,200 Yelpers.
Beyond her marketing expertise, Hazel is a feminist entrepreneur who is dedicated to building a more equitable world. She cohosts the Audacity Marketing podcast with Michelle Frechette. What do you enjoy most about working in WordPress?
As someone who has been deeply involved in the WordPress community for years, there are many things I enjoy about working in this dynamic and exciting industry. However, what I enjoy the most is the incredible sense of community that exists among WordPress enthusiasts.
The WordPress community is incredibly diverse and inclusive, and it provides endless opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals who share a passion for building and creating. The sense of camaraderie and shared purpose is truly inspiring, and it creates a unique and welcoming environment that fosters collaboration and growth.
I also appreciate the innovative spirit that defines the WordPress community. There is always something new and exciting happening, whether it’s a new plugin or theme, an updated version of WordPress, or a fresh take on web design. This constant evolution and growth keep the industry exciting and dynamic, and it provides an ongoing opportunity to push boundaries and explore new frontiers.

What business/web/WordPress advice do you have for others in our industry?
As someone who loves working with nerds and is deeply ingrained in the WordPress community, I understand the importance of staying sharp and connected to other tech communities. My advice to those in the WP industry is to get involved in at least one other tech community outside of WordPress. This will allow you to broaden your perspective and stay current on industry trends and best practices.
I highly recommend seeking out solutions that you actually use in tech. This will help you stay focused and passionate about the work you do. For me, using WordPress myself and landing The Events Calendar as a client was a perfect match. As they were acquired by LiquidWeb, I was able to witness firsthand the birth of StellarWP, which further increased my love for WordPress.
However, it’s also important to recognize that being deep in any community can sometimes make it hard to see the good. That’s why it’s essential to stay involved in other communities and maintain a broad perspective. By doing so, you’ll gain fresh insights and ideas that can help you be more innovative, creative, and successful in the WP industry.
