Here’s a great example of a utility plugin that someday could have a chance showing up in core. Justin Sternberg has created a plugin to tame sidebars in the widgets admin so they are visible only via a dropdown, and sticky when you scroll. I like it much better than the default.

That’s a nice intermediate UI improvement, but I’d like to see dynamic sidebars completely redesigned to be analogous to custom nav menus.
Dynamic sidebars can be assigned a theme_location. Users can create named Custom Widget Areas (just like named Custom Nav Menus). Users could then assign a named Custom Widget Areas to a Theme-defined dynamic sidebar theme_location.
I think that would make much more sense, long-term.
Handy, but what if you want to move widgets between active sidebars? Not sure how that one goes.
The native widgets UI needs a big overhaul in my opinion. Not sure a custom nav menu type interface would work as well, although there is a nice-ish plugin that emulated that UI for managing widgets already.
