The phrase “over budget” is naturally associated with government projects, but I found this case of Canada government ignoring a lower cost solution particularly interesting. The Canadian government went with Adobe, and since then the costs have gone from $1.95-million to more than $9.2 million.
What I found interesting what that the government never apparently never considered an open source solution – in case Drupal, which operates other government sites in Canada and in other countries (here’s a list on Drupal’s own site – wish we had similar lists for WordPress).
This particular case isn’t about WordPress directly, but in order for WordPress to be considered by government and large corporations – open source itself needs to be taken seriously and at least considered. It still looks like we have a way to go.
