WordPress developers are used to the criticism from other coding communities when it comes to PHP (some of it well deserved). There have been articles discussing pros and cons before, but I enjoyed Keith Adams (from the engineering team at Slack) take on PHP’s virtues and the reasons it’s hated. I think Keith’s introduction statement is accurate:
PHP is unique Most programmers who have only casually used PHP know two things about it: that it is a bad language, which they would never use if given the choice; and that some of the most extraordinarily successful projects in history use it.
Slack uses PHP for most of its server-side application logic currently. This article made the rounds a while back, but it’s worth mentioning again.
The arguments for PHP often remind me of Churchhill’s quote about democracy.
