Dries Buytaert has a thoughtful article on saving the open web. In case you weren’t aware, Dries is the founder and project lead of Drupal, so he definitely has an insight into open-source and surrounding web technologies.
Instead of trying to summarize his thoughts, I would recommend you give it a read. I truly believe there needs to be a balance between “walled” communities and sites with great influence with technologies (as Dries puts it) that represent “open values of transparency and choice.”
