Drawing on a gender gap at WCUS noticed by Women in WP, Rob Howard thinks there might be a “self-employment penalty” on conference attendance that disproportionately affects women. There’s a lot of speculation in this article, but it’s a subject worth deeper analysis. Whatever the cause, a 2:1 male-to-female ratio in WCUS attendees (or people who got tickets, at any rate) points to there being some real barriers to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
