  1. Ouch… so with 23 million Tumblr users, according to rumors, Verizon sold them for less than $1/user… Very interested to hear if that ever gets confirmed.

It’ll be interesting what they do with it… and how quickly.

  2. 1. It sounds like Verizon begged them to take the company. I can’t imagine that those 200 people will be keeping their jobs for long…

    2. Switching backend to WP, huh? A perfect time to rename WordPress.com to Tumblr! It needs a hipper name anyway to stay relevant in a world of Medium, Wix, etc. Better yet, merge the two old brands into a new brand name/community (pipe dream). Then, WordPress has a real chance of actually being its own open source community…

    3. And here I was excited about a new Adult GIFs module in Jetpack…

    • Well that’s a side effect… but my guess is that will be as much challenge as benefit. Onboarding a large group of non-remote people from a different corporate culture isn’t a simple task.

  3. It doesn’t surprise me that Automattic would want to buy Tumblr, but it does surprise me that it would be sold for what is comparatively chump change.

This is huge news, and I’m looking forward to what happens with Tumblr going forward.

Yahoo! is a disaster. How can they keep buying perfectly good web services and just drive them into the ground like this. It’s bizarre.
